Q: how come bmw m3 E46 is faster than the benz sl55 AMG?
recently i saw a race between bmw m3 and sl55 amg.it was a drag race.i was shocked bmw has only 300-350 bhp, benz sl55 has got somewhere 500bhp.how come is that?
A: All other things equal (like both drivers are equally good, with both engines running properly, etc.), it mostly boils down to:
a) power to weight ratio (horsepower/weight)
b) gear ratios
An extreme example of the situation is a motorcycle running circles on a fancy racing car with lots of horsepower.
Q: What are common problems with the 2002 bmw m3?

Q: Problems with Electric windows on BMW 1998 M3 Cab?
I have a BMW M3 1998 model soft top. The electric windows in the front have stopped working, i have checked the fuse and there isnt one in there. How can i find out what watt/colour the fuse has to be? Also can you just pull fuses out or do they have to be taken out with a tool?!
Thanks for any help!
A: There isn’t a fuse for the power windows on most BMWs. Instead, there is a circuit breaker located near the console mounted power window switches. I think on your car it is located behind the shifter, in front of the handbrake. If not, it is under the steering wheel above your right knee. When the circuit breaker is thrown, a button pops up about a milimeter. Push it back down and then try the windows.
Q: How long will it take for the current BMW E46 M3 to be outdated?
BMW has released information on the all-new M3, how will the prices of the current M3 be affected? Has it already shown, or will it be more so when the new M3’s already start rolling? How long will the E46 M3 still look “good” with the new E92 V8 M3’s rolling around?
How “worth it” would it be to buy an E46 M3 as of right now?
A: If you can afford one now, buy one. You won’t save much by waiting a few years for the price to go down, and you’ll definitely miss out on having the ultimate driving machine. The E46 will still look good 50 years from now if not longer, just like the 3.0 CSL still looks great, the M1 is still an iconic supercar, and how most people can’t believe my E30 M3 is almost 20 years old. This Bimmer is destined to become a classic.
The August 2007 edition of Bimmer magazine is available at bookstores right now, and it has a very in depth M3 Market Update, going over current values and everything else you might want to know about E30s, E36s, and E46s.
Q: how can you tell the difference between a bmw e36 m3 and a normal bmw e36?
my friend got a new car.. its a bmw e36 1992 but he put m3 bodykits on it and a m3 side mirrors and a m3 spoiler and had it repainted and put an m3 badge on it. sounds kinda poserish i know but it looks like a m3 to me.. so besides looking at the engine how can i tell the difference between an m3 and a normal e36?
A: where do i start! first of all, those lovely 3 striped M badges
grill front, side guards and boot, all over the interior. Front and rear bumpers, side skirts and M Mirrors. List goes on…
Its quiet easy to buy an E36 and turn it into a look-a-like, but the way i would tell the difference is by the muffler (might sound strange but yeah) Thats one thing that people dont bother changing unless they go aftermarket. The actual muffler is a lot bigger and fatter than the standard E36s, plus the twin outlets is a give away too
By the sounds of it your friend is going for looks. With the changes he/she has made, i would leave it at that. By the time you start getting into the finer points, you might as well have spent the money upfront and bought the real deal.
Hope this helps
Q: How can i Spice up my silver BMW M3 E46?
I have a 2003 bmw M3 e46, im getting bored with the way it looks, how can i make it cooler looking. It has 40,000 miles and dont want to put too much into it. I was thinking of: tinting windows, Racemesh grill, facelift. Any other ideas? I dont want to make it look too taky but getting bored and want to make it stand out a little.
What about Racemesh grills? And what about Angel Eyes? And Eye lids? Tinting the windows? are these a waste of time or tacky?
A: In my opinion, if you simply washed and polished this car really well (including wheels), and spray on some tire shine, you’ll look golden – especially in these sunny weather! Cheap and effective.
You’ll soon realise how many people actually don’t take the time to shine up their cars regularly.
For night time, the only recommendation I would make is to add some angel eyes. Get some good ones though, not the cheapy ones.
You can also look at adding some BMW options like PDC, Euro side mirror glass (with wide-angle section, without those annoying words). Change out those useless cupholders to a nice BMW console box with slide covers.
Add in an XM radio, or completely change out your radio with one that includes DVD/GPS.
Q: Should I put the original engine in a 1981 BMW 320i, or should I put in an upgraded M3 engine?
Can a BMW E36 M3 engine fit into a 1981 BMW 320i frame?
If so, how much will that engine cost, and how much would a BMW E30 engine cost; the new and used kinds?
What should I put in, the original right, but how much would that cost? Please post any legit sources that are bound to help me on my search, thank you.
A: I dont think a e36 M3 engine will fit 320i frame. The M-POWER engine will cost you a fair amount of money. good luck hooking up that engine thats going to be a bitch
Q: What is the fastest engine found in a BMW M3?
I want an M3 and would like to know the difference between all of the engines like: E36 S54 E92 etc… Bottom line, i want the quickest one. I obviously can’t get the GTR or anything like that because it would be my daily driver.
A: The quickest one stock is the e92 body and S65B40 engine. (4L V8)
However, both the e36 and e46 are capable of over 1000 horsepower with the right mods, and can still be daily driven.
Q: where can i find a shop to customize a bmw m3?
i need to find a shop that will find and buy performance upgrades and install on a bmw m3
A: Where are you located? Is there a Dinan dealer near you?
Q: How expensive is it to own a 2004 BMW M3 as far as maintenance is concerned?
I’m looking to buy one, please keep in mind I have owned a 2001 BMW 7 series so I know a little something about them but was just concerned about the M/// Division because of the high performance parts.
A: The E38 was a very solid dependable car so comparing a luxury sedan to a border line race car won’t work.
You had a great car in the 7 and the M3 is another great car.
Because it is basically a detuned race car cost of ownership will be more than a standard vehicle. The cost of parts specific to the car will be pricey but also consider that the car needs to be kept in perfect tune which means more trips to the shop unless you can do it yourself. Compared to the true M cars (pre ‘95) they are relatively easy to service and maintain and don’t need quite as much attention.
A guess would put it at about 25% more expensive than your E38 if it was a 750i and 30% more expensive if it were a 740i.
Q: What are your thoughts (car buffs mainly) on a BMW M3 Coupe?
I was thinking of getting a BMW M3 or a BMW 135i mid summer what are your thoughts?
A: Plain and simple the m3 is the best compact sports car made and has a ton of aftermarket mods that will blow you away, will get you tons of pussycat meow.
Q: Importing BMW M3 into Aus and the costs associated with this?
Hey everyone,
i am looking to import a bmw m3 into australia, specifically melbourne.
Just wondering if anyone knows the associated costs in doing so, such as taxes, conversion, compilation, etc ?
cheers
A: There is a 97% import tax on all cars manufactured outside Australia and the car must be converted to right hand drive. There is a kit that can be purchased for BMW but the cost of that kit plus the installation will not be that cheap. You will be much better off buying a car manufactured in Australia.
Q: What are the physical difference between the BMW M3 and the other BMWs?
other than the logo on the rear, what other physical features set apart these two. Only those from 2000-
Beside performance, how does it look on the outside, not the interior. Any body feature that gives away it’s identity.
A: Appears you’re not getting the answer to the question you’ve asked, let me help.
First of all there is NOT more then one type of an M3 in the 2000 range you mentioned., there is only one. Just had to correct that. 2008 will be the first new one.
Physical differences are:
Headlamps
Front grill and airintake
bulging hood
Flared Fenders, both front and back
rear view and side mirrors are different
steering wheel is A LOT thicker then non M3’s
seats are higher performance with bigger side bolsters
side “gills” (which are actually non functional, just cosmetic)
IF you have the SMG model then you have a different shifter knob as well as paddle shifters attached to steering wheel.
And 4 exhaust pipes instead of 1.
those are the major differences without going into painful detail.
I hope I have answered your question.
Q: Why does the engine in my BMW M3 make such strange noises?
2003 M3 engine sounds like it’s clinking and clunking
A: The proper grade of oil is important, so is having it serviced regularly at a BMW dealer. The important services are the inspections that happen about every 30,000 miles, they are important because the valves get adjusted and if they dont get adjusted they will make noise. Even under normal operation that engine is just noisy though. The minimum octane rating for all BMWs is just 91, not 95.
Q: What is needed for a BMW M3 E36 auto to manual conversion?
Its a 95′ in amazing condition I would just rather it as a manual. If anyone has a parts list that is needed for the conversion and if someone who works in a shop knows how many hours it would take.
A: How about a minimum of around $5,000, or more (and probably more). You’ll need a flywheel, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate, bell housing, transmission, Clutch/brake pedal assembly with mounting hardware, shifter, clutch linkage, master and slave cylinders, drive shaft, maybe a new rear cross member and who knows what else. The $5K is dependent on your being able to find all the parts in a wrecking yard which doesn’t know how much BMW parts are worth and then doing all the work yourself. In other words, more than the car is worth.
ADDED: If it’s a computerized car you’ll need that from a manual car along with the accompanying wiring harness as well.
